Sam Lord’s Castle Barbados, A Wyndham Grand Resort opens in late September

Eduardo Cruz del Rio, the Vice President of Operations for Latin America and the Caribbean at Wyndham Hotels, announced that when the Sam Lord’s Castle Barbados, A Wyndham Grand Resort opens in late September, it will not only be the largest all-inclusive resort in Barbados but also the largest hotel on the island. During the recent coverage of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s Caribbean Travel Marketplace in Barbados, Travel Market Report had the opportunity to visit the Sam Lord’s Castle Barbados and witness the progress being made.

Cruz del Rio revealed that construction on the resort began six years ago, but due to the impact of COVID-19, the project experienced a delay of two years. However, the hotel is now set to open on September 30, and they are already accepting bookings for the upcoming year.

The vice president highlighted that the Sam Lord’s Castle Barbados, A Wyndham Grand Resort will not only be the largest hotel in Barbados but will also feature the largest banquet facility on the island. Additionally, it will be the newest all-inclusive resort in Barbados, a destination that has not been known for its extensive all-inclusive offerings.

Cruz del Rio emphasized that their resort will cater to families rather than directly competing with the popular Sandals Barbados, which is exclusively for couples. The Sam Lord’s Castle Barbados will be divided into three sections: one for families, one for adults only, and another for groups.

According to Cruz del Rio, they anticipate little competition from other hotels in Barbados as most establishments can’t accommodate the large groups they aim to attract. The resort consists of five towers, each housing approximately 80 to 100 rooms, resulting in a total of 422 rooms. These include various types of accommodations such as Deluxe Queen and Deluxe King rooms, Executive Suites, One-Bedroom Suites, and Presidential Suites.

Regarding the spa, named The Spa at Sam Lord’s Castle, Cruz del Rio revealed that it will offer a total of eight treatment rooms, with six indoors and two outdoors.

The project is a new build development, as the previous property on the site, another Sam Lord’s Castle Hotel under the Marriott brand, was demolished about 20 years ago due to being deemed unfit for renovation.

Cruz del Rio expressed the resort’s commitment to sustainable tourism and mentioned that they will prioritize locally sourced, organic produce for their guests. He emphasized that Barbados, with its rich agricultural diversity, provides an abundant supply of high-quality ingredients.

The vice president shared that he recently showcased the property to approximately 40 travel advisors during the Caribbean Travel Marketplace, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. He highlighted the strong interest in the resort due to its historical significance and its special place in the hearts of Barbadians, many of whom have fond memories of getting married at the previous Sam Lord’s Castle.
