Barbados has no intentions of implementing a citizenship-by-investment program for foreign nationals, but a forthcoming legislative update will introduce a more comprehensive framework for acquiring citizenship. Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wilfred Abrahams, has made it clear that economic citizenship is not under consideration.
Recently, the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) reported that, during a courtesy meeting with Patrice Quesada, Chief of Missions of the International Organization for Migration, Abrahams expressed the government’s commitment to establishing a system allowing individuals to acquire citizenship through various methods, including investment.

However, a subsequent statement issued on Thursday clarified the minister’s stance. When directly questioned about the possibility of a Citizenship by Investment Program in line with other Caribbean nations, Abrahams reaffirmed that Barbados has never endorsed such an investment-based citizenship initiative and had no intentions of pursuing one. Instead, he elaborated on the forthcoming legislation, which will introduce a points-based system, expanding the avenues for individuals to apply for citizenship, as opposed to the currently limited criteria.
Abrahams emphasized that, even under the proposed points-based system, investment alone would not serve as the sole basis for granting citizenship in Barbados. The government’s position remains steadfast in its commitment to a more inclusive and diverse approach to citizenship acquisition.
