Minister Gooding-Edghill of the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, along with the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), is pleased to announce a significant expansion in Barbados’ airline connectivity with the United States. American Airlines is set to double the number of gateways from the United States to Barbados, increasing the total to seven—a historic milestone for Barbados’ tourism industry.

Starting November 5, 2024, American Airlines will inaugurate daily nonstop service from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, utilizing a 737 aircraft with a capacity of 172 seats. Additionally, from November 9, 2024, a Saturday-only service will commence from Philadelphia, operated with a 190-seat A321 aircraft. These new seasonal services mark a substantial enhancement in Barbados’ accessibility, catering to the growing demand for travel to the island.

The introduction of these services not only expands the number of gateways but also elevates the premium travel experience with an increased availability of business class seats. This strategic move aligns with the Ministry’s objectives to attract high-value visitors to Barbados.

These additional American Airlines services will bring an extra 35,000 seats into Barbados, significantly boosting the island’s capacity to accommodate travelers from the US market. Combined with the recently announced services from Delta Airlines, which will provide a seven-day-a-week service from Atlanta and a Saturday-only service from New York, the total seasonal capacity increase amounts to 65,000 seats, unlocking immense potential for the tourism industry stakeholders.

The resumption of American Airlines’ JFK service and the introduction of a new gateway from Philadelphia underscore the success of ongoing efforts to expand Barbados’ presence in the US market. This incremental approach aims to strengthen connections with key US cities, ensuring greater accessibility for travelers.

With this major announcement, the BTMI has ample time to plan and promote these new routes ahead of the 2024/2025 winter season. The BTMI USA office remains dedicated to marketing these services effectively, bolstering the success of these new connections.

Furthermore, these services complement the ongoing “We Gatherin” campaign, which targets the Barbadian diaspora, enhancing the island’s appeal to both local and international audiences.

American Airlines has been a longstanding partner in Barbados’ aviation history, with its first flight dating back to 1975. The continued expansion of services reflects the airline’s confidence in Barbados as a premier destination.
