Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has declared that almost every building in Barbados that is not fit for purpose will be rebuilt within the next decade or two, either voluntarily or by mandate. Reflecting on the devastating impact of Hurricane Barrow, a category four hurricane that formed to the east-southeast of Barbados, Mottley highlighted the urgency of this initiative. The hurricane presented what coastal engineers termed the “most perfect storm for storm surge,” underscoring the critical need for climate-resilient construction.

“This is not something for the government alone, or schools alone,” Mottley stressed. “This is something for each and every Barbadian who has a relationship with a building.” She emphasized the importance of collective effort, reminding citizens that “many hands make light work.”

Mottley urged Barbadians to understand that every house and building in the country must become climate resilient. She warned that failure to meet these standards would lead to forced reconstruction, as non-compliant buildings will not withstand future climatic events.

The Prime Minister’s message is clear: Barbados must enter a new era of construction and adaptation to ensure the safety and resilience of its infrastructure against the growing threats of climate change.
