According to Monique Archer, a member of the executive team at the Barbados Polo Club, the sport has the potential to reinvigorate the country’s tourism industry and generate foreign exchange. With two international tours on the horizon, Archer believes that the upcoming events will be instrumental in achieving this goal. The just-concluded series between Barbados and the USA, which ended in a 2-1 victory for Barbados, was a resounding success, with a record-breaking crowd attending the final game.

In an interview with Barbados TODAY, Archer stated that polo could be a significant driver of sports tourism on the island, particularly when combined with other popular sports like horseracing and golf. The upcoming Cheshire and Canada tours in February and March, respectively, are expected to draw significant numbers of tourists, many of whom will come specifically to watch polo.

While the pandemic has caused some local members to drop out, Archer revealed that some Canadians have made Barbados their home for the polo season, leasing horses and supporting the local economy.

Despite some sponsors taking a step back due to the prolonged absence of polo, loyal sponsors such as Diamonds International have continued to invest in the sport, allowing the club to host events. Archer expressed optimism that other sponsors would return next year, based on the success of the 2023 season.
