Sports play a crucial role in Barbados’ tourism industry, according to Kamal Springer, Sports Manager at the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc (BTMI). Speaking to pupils at Eagle Hall Primary School during their Male Week initiative, Springer emphasized the significant economic impact of sports tourism on the island.

Under the theme “Today’s Boys, Tomorrow’s Tourism Stars,” Springer encouraged students to consider careers in the local tourism sector, highlighting the economic benefits of the intersection between sports and tourism. He cited the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup matches at Kensington Oval as a prime example of how sporting events can generate substantial returns for citizens.

“Around 30,000 people have travelled to Barbados this month to enjoy cricket,” Springer noted.

He elaborated on the extensive economic impact, explaining, “Everyone working in hotels, restaurants, taxi services, and other sectors benefits from these visitors. This influx helps create jobs and boosts the economy of Barbados.”

Springer also highlighted the role of sporting icons in promoting Barbados as a destination, pointing to West Indies and Barbados opening batsman, Desmond Haynes, as a prime example.

“Desmond Haynes is famous worldwide; when we take him to events in the United Kingdom, Latin America, and other regions, people recognize him and want to learn more about him and why they should visit Barbados,” he explained.

The BTMI executive encouraged pupils with sporting aspirations to pursue them, noting that athletes have historically played a crucial role in promoting the country’s tourism.

“If we utilize sports effectively, we can attract many visitors to enjoy the attractions in Barbados,” he said.
