Saint Lucia’s Opposition Leader, Allen Chastanet, has passionately advocated for the empowerment of small businesses, emphasizing their vital role in driving economic growth and preserving cultural heritage in the Caribbean.
Speaking at the 10th Annual Leo Leacock Memorial Lecture at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination, Chastanet celebrated the significance of small enterprises in fostering innovation and promoting long-term development. “I believe small businesses are the backbone of our economy and key to the future development of our region,” Chastanet remarked at the event, which took place during the 21st Annual Small Business Week. The lecture, themed Small Businesses as a Catalyst for Economic Growth, provided a platform for the former prime minister to encourage governments to nurture small enterprises.
Drawing from his extensive experience in tourism and business, Chastanet emphasized that small businesses not only contribute to economic prosperity but also help preserve the rich cultural identities of Caribbean nations. He encouraged local entrepreneurs to take advantage of the thriving tourism industry, creating authentic, culturally enriched products that would appeal to visitors and foster long-term business relationships.
“Tourism presents a tremendous opportunity for local businesses,” Chastanet explained. “Tourists are always searching for unique, authentic experiences, and by offering products that reflect our culture, we can build lasting connections and expand into international markets.”

Chastanet cited inspiring examples like Tortuga Rum Cakes, which began as a small venture in the Cayman Islands and grew into a global brand by harnessing the power of tourism and strategic export planning. He urged entrepreneurs to adopt a global mindset from the outset, reminding them that many of today’s leading companies started as small businesses.
“There’s a vast global market waiting for us, far beyond the shores of the Caribbean. The key is to think big, innovate, and seize the opportunities available,” he stated.
Chastanet also called for a collaborative effort among governments, the private sector, and civil society to create the ideal environment for small businesses to flourish both domestically and internationally. He highlighted the importance of innovation, continuous improvement, and embracing new technologies to remain competitive in the global economy.
“Our small businesses have the potential to achieve incredible success,” Chastanet said. “But to do that, we need the right infrastructure, access to capital, and forward-thinking policies that will support their growth and development.”

He encouraged governments to act swiftly, ensuring that the necessary support systems are in place to empower small enterprises and foster an environment of creativity and opportunity.
“Small businesses are the key to unlocking our region’s full potential,” he concluded. “With the right support, there’s no limit to what they can achieve.”
His remarks resonated with optimism and a shared vision for the future, inspiring a renewed focus on the essential role of small businesses in the Caribbean’s economic landscape.
