Barbados News – Run Barbados 2024 Set to Boost Sports Tourism

The highly anticipated 2024 edition of Run Barbados, scheduled for December 6th to 8th, has officially been launched, with organizers highlighting its growing appeal among international athletes. As one of the Caribbean’s premier sporting events, it continues to play a crucial role in elevating Barbados’ status as a sports tourism destination.

One notable development for this year is the focus on expanding participation from African countries, known for producing elite long-distance runners. The Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) sees this as a strategic market for future growth, even though direct air connections from Africa remain a challenge.

During a recent press briefing at BTMI’s headquarters in Warrens, Director of Marketing Robert Chase emphasized the event’s importance in sustaining the island’s tourism industry during the off-peak season.

“The Run Barbados Marathon weekend is pivotal in our efforts to boost tourism during the shoulder season,” Chase stated. “Sports tourism plays a vital role in generating steady visitor arrivals, and this event, in particular, has a significant economic impact. From hotel bookings to restaurant visits and local attractions, Run Barbados stimulates vital revenue across various sectors.”

Now in its 41st year, Run Barbados has established itself as a leading marathon in the region, attracting participants from all corners of the globe. Organizers expect this trend to continue, with runners from the USA, UK, Canada, and the Caribbean set to compete for substantial prize money—up to $2,500 USD for first place in some events.

Chase also highlighted the inclusiveness of the event, saying, “Whether you’re chasing a podium finish or aiming for a personal best, Run Barbados offers a chance to experience one of the purest forms of exercise in a breathtaking setting.”

The organizers have their sights set on growing African participation, which could significantly elevate the event’s international profile. Despite logistical hurdles, efforts are underway to develop airlift connections that would enable greater participation from African athletes in the coming years.

“We’ve seen promising results from African participants in the past,” Chase said. “Now, we’re focused on building air routes that will make it easier for more athletes from that region to join us. Once those gateways are established, we expect to see a notable increase in African runners.”

This year’s goal is to attract around 1,000 participants, with 600 local and 400 international runners. To encourage local engagement, especially among younger athletes, discounts will be offered to schoolchildren and large groups. BTMI Sports Manager Kamal Springer revealed that primary school children will receive a 50% discount on registration fees, while secondary students will get a 30% discount. Groups of 10 to 19 people can benefit from a 10% discount, with even greater savings for larger groups.
