Barbados and Qatar have taken a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations by signing an Air Services Agreement (ASA), allowing designated airlines from both countries the flexibility to operate without directional or geographical restrictions. The agreement is expected to foster cooperation in various sectors, including tourism, education, and trade.

In addition to boosting air connectivity, the agreement paves the way for broader collaboration in capacity-building, scholarship opportunities, and increased investment between the two nations.

Barbados’ Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Ian Gooding-Edghill, signed the ASA in Doha alongside Mohamed Faleh Alhajri, President of Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority. Gooding-Edghill highlighted that this agreement aligns with Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s initiative to enhance regional air connectivity in the Caribbean while strengthening ties with the Middle East.

“This ASA marks an important step towards deepening ties between Barbados and Qatar, setting the foundation for enhanced collaboration in the aviation sector and creating new opportunities to explore air connectivity between our regions,” said Gooding-Edghill.

The minister further emphasized Qatar’s prominence in the global aviation industry, noting that it is home to one of the busiest airports and largest airlines in the world.

The Barbados delegation, led by Gooding-Edghill, is also exploring opportunities for technical assistance and capacity-building in civil aviation with Qatar. Delegation members include key officials from the Ministry of International Transport and the Barbados Civil Aviation Authority.

Barbados and Qatar have maintained diplomatic relations since December 4, 2007, and this latest agreement underscores their commitment to expanding international cooperation and economic engagement.
