Barbados is positioning itself as a gateway for UK businesses eager to expand into the Caribbean, offering a stable economy, modern infrastructure, and a vibrant trade partnership with Britain. These opportunities were spotlighted as the 2024 UK Trade and Investment Mission to Barbados officially kicked off this week.

The opening event, hosted at the elegant Crane Resort, was a collaboration between the UK Department for Business and Trade, Invest Barbados, and the Renfrewshire Business Network. D’Jamila Ward, Regional Director for the Commonwealth Caribbean at the UK Department for Business and Trade, passionately urged UK firms to seize the moment, emphasizing that Barbados is “ripe and ready” for business investment.

Barbados: A Trusted Trade Partner

Ward highlighted the growing trade relationship between the two nations, with total trade reaching an impressive £560 million (approximately $1.42 billion) in the year ending Q2 2024. Barbados stands as the UK’s fourth-largest trading partner in the CARIFORUM, contributing over 11% to the region’s trade with Britain.

Despite global economic uncertainties, Ward was optimistic about Barbados’ economic outlook:

“It’s a great time to do business in Barbados, and I’ll say it again—it truly is.”

She also praised the contributions of UK companies already active on the island, such as ABAGO Limited, which has been instrumental in digitizing Barbados’ historical archives dating back to 1635. These collaborations, Ward noted, symbolize the deep, long-term partnerships between the two nations.

A Gateway for Scottish Firms

The CARIFORUM-UK Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) presents an even brighter future, according to Ward. She encouraged Scottish companies to view Barbados as a strategic base for exporting goods and services across the Caribbean.

“The UK’s commitment to Barbados is unwavering. This partnership is about building sustainable, mutually beneficial relationships that unlock opportunities for all,” she added.

Strengthening UK-Barbados Ties

British High Commissioner to Barbados, Scott Furssedonn-Wood, echoed these sentiments, welcoming the robust delegation of UK business leaders to the island.

“Your presence underscores the enduring partnership between our countries and the incredible opportunities that lie ahead.”

The High Commissioner’s words encapsulate the mission’s core message: Barbados is not just a destination—it’s a partner for UK businesses seeking growth, innovation, and success in the Caribbean region.
