On Saturday, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados hosted a strategic meeting with the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Keith Rowley; President of Guyana, Dr. Irfaan Ali; and St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Finance Minister, Camillo Gonsalves. The high-level talks were conducted with a bipartisan Congressional Delegation led by United States House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

This pivotal dialogue coincided with Barbados’ celebration of its 58th Anniversary of Independence, the 3rd Anniversary of the Republic, and the centenary of Shirley Chisholm’s birth.

The discussions centered on several pressing issues of mutual interest:

  • Regional Security: Strengthening initiatives to maintain the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
  • The Climate Crisis: Highlighting the disproportionate impacts on Small Island Developing States and advocating for urgent international action.
  • Access to Concessional Funding: Promoting financing models based on vulnerability rather than GDP per capita to better address the region’s unique challenges.
  • Economic Transformation: Crafting new agendas for sustainable growth through development and investment.
  • Market Access and Near-Shoring: Identifying opportunities to boost trade and deepen economic partnerships.

Prime Minister Mottley, alongside Prime Minister Rowley and President Ali, reaffirmed the region’s dedication to fostering alliances that advance sustainable development, equitable trade, and regional security. Minority Leader Jeffries expressed a strong commitment to supporting the Caribbean’s development priorities, underscoring the importance of U.S.-Caribbean collaboration in tackling global challenges.
