Barbados is taking a bold step toward modernizing governance with the appointment of Senator Jonathan Reid as the new Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science, and Technology (MIST). During a brief swearing-in ceremony at State House, Reid was officially sworn in by President Dame Sandra Mason, marking a renewed commitment to efficiency and digital transformation.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley emphasized the ministry’s vital role in reshaping government operations to meet the evolving expectations of citizens. She acknowledged that technology has drastically changed what people expect from their leaders, and failure to keep pace can erode trust in governance.

“One of the challenges we’ve faced is transitioning from an analogue environment to a digital one. While we’ve made progress, we need to move even faster,” Mottley stated. “If we are to maintain faith in democracy, we must meet the expectations of our citizens, and this ministry is key to bridging that gap through digitization and innovation.”

Beyond digital transformation, Mottley also highlighted concerns in science and technology education. She pointed out that too many young people are struggling in Mathematics and Science, a gap that CARICOM leaders aim to address through a newly established Educational Transformation Commission.

“Industry is another key component of this ministry,” she added. “If you look around Barbados, much of our industrial infrastructure remains unchanged for decades. It’s time for renewal and modernization.”

A Ministry of Opportunity

Senator Reid sees his new role as an opportunity to drive collaboration and efficiency across all sectors of government.

“This ministry has incredible potential. It serves as a backbone, supporting the work of other ministries through digital transformation,” Reid remarked. “Technology is a powerful tool that can drive efficiency, innovation, and progress. If we embrace it fully and work together, we have the chance to build a truly transformative Barbados.”

Reid brings a wealth of experience to the position, having previously served as an advisor to Prime Minister Mottley and later as Chief of Staff from 2022. His educational background includes Christ Church Foundation School, the Barbados Community College, and The University of the West Indies.
