Barbados News – Barbados Expands Canadian Reach with New Direct Halifax Service on Air Canada

Barbados is set to strengthen its connectivity with Canada through the launch of a new non-stop air service from Halifax, marking a significant milestone in the island’s ongoing airlift strategy.

Operated by Air Canada, the new route will begin on December 17, 2026, with weekly Thursday flights using a 177-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft—providing a direct link between Barbados and Atlantic Canada for the first time in several years.

A Strategic Expansion of Airlift

The introduction of this route represents the first new Canadian connection in years, reinforcing Barbados’ commitment to improving accessibility and strengthening its presence in key international markets.

According to Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., the service is the result of more than 18 months of strategic planning, data-driven analysis, and collaboration with airline partners—highlighting a deliberate and long-term approach to growth.

Minister of Tourism Ian Gooding-Edghill noted that expanding airlift remains a central priority, with the new Halifax connection directly aligned with efforts to drive sustainable tourism development.

Strengthening a Key Market

Canada continues to be one of Barbados’ most important source markets, with steady growth in visitor arrivals across regions including Ontario, Quebec, Western Canada, and now increasingly Atlantic Canada.

The new Halifax service is expected to:

  • Improve access for travelers in Eastern Canada
  • Support continued growth in visitor arrivals
  • Strengthen Barbados’ position as a leading Caribbean destination

Andrea Franklin, CEO of BTMI, emphasized that the route enhances ease of travel while reinforcing Barbados’ global appeal, adding that it is expected to drive incremental tourism growth and support industry stakeholders.

Building Momentum in Canada

The launch builds on a strong year for Barbados in the Canadian market. According to BTMI, the island recently recorded its highest visitor arrivals from Canada in 45 years, alongside expanded capacity from Toronto and increased frequency from Montreal.

Eusi Skeete highlighted that the Halifax route is the result of a focused strategy over the past 18 months—one that has prioritized engagement with travel partners, stronger market positioning, and targeted outreach in underserved regions.

“This new service unlocks opportunities in areas where demand is growing but access has been limited,” he noted, adding that Barbados is becoming not only an aspirational destination, but an increasingly accessible one.
