Barbados Port Inc. has unveiled plans to transform into the world’s most innovative and environmentally sustainable maritime hub by 2030. CEO David Jean-Marie announced the ambitious vision during a ceremony honoring top students in marine diesel engineering and marine operations from the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology.
Central to the port’s transformation is a comprehensive fleet replacement program that includes acquiring cutting-edge equipment and technology. Jean-Marie emphasized the importance of workforce development, stating that upskilling both new and existing talent is key to adapting to rapid technological advancements and achieving operational excellence.

“Our investment in skilled graduates ensures high returns on our efforts and positions us to enhance productivity and efficiency within port operations,” said Jean-Marie.
A major milestone in this plan is the construction of a state-of-the-art boat repair facility along the Mighty Grynner Highway. Spanning 4.5 acres, the facility will provide essential services for local and transit vessels, addressing long-standing needs in the boating industry. It aims to reduce foreign exchange outflows by offering local repair services, eliminating the need for boat owners to send vessels overseas.

Jean-Marie added, “This facility will cater to both commercial and recreational vessels, offering maintenance and emergency repair services. It will also create opportunities for training in critical maritime skills through partnerships with educational institutions and the private sector.”
The concession for the facility’s design and construction has already been awarded to a private entity, signaling progress toward realizing the port’s master plan.
