Barbados News – BIFF 2025 Brings 60 Films from 20 Countries Starting January 29

The Barbados Independent Film Festival (BIFF) is set to captivate audiences with a dazzling showcase of international cinema, featuring 60 films from 20 countries over five unforgettable days.

Celebrating its ninth edition, BIFF 2025 promises to deliver a compelling blend of storytelling, artistry, and cultural diversity, drawing residents and visitors alike into its cinematic journey.

At the official media launch, Festival Director De Carla Applewhaite shared that this year’s theme, “Global Cinema,” emerged naturally from the festival’s impressive lineup. “The Barbados Independent Film Festival this year has received over 350 entries,” she announced. Submissions span the globe, including ten films from Barbados, eleven from Turkey, and entries from countries as diverse as Nigeria, Estonia, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, and Hong Kong.

Among the highlights is a special feature by US-based Barbadian filmmaker Mary Cecilia Walker, whose short film The Roads We Travel will premiere at the festival.

This year’s festival also emphasizes environmental advocacy, incorporating short films and ambassadors who are both filmmakers and activists. “We see this platform as a way to inspire and mentor the next generation,” Applewhaite said, stressing BIFF’s role in nurturing young talent and fostering a love of filmmaking in Barbados and beyond.

As BIFF continues to expand, it strengthens its mission to position Barbados as a hub for creative innovation within the Caribbean. “The festival is a product of the creative orange economy, and we are committed to supporting local talent while influencing the global stage,” Applewhaite added.
