President Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi presented the award, praising Mottley for her visionary leadership and her steadfast commitment to the principles of Caribbean integration since taking office in 2018. As Barbados’ first female Prime Minister and leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), Mottley has spearheaded transformative initiatives, including Barbados’ historic transition to a republic—a move President Santokhi described as a “beacon of progress and inspiration.”

Under her leadership, Barbados has strengthened its ties with Suriname. In July 2022, both nations signed an agreement to establish a strategic dialogue and cooperation platform, fostering collaboration in key sectors such as agriculture, trade, and tourism. President Santokhi lauded this partnership as a testament to Mottley’s dedication to regional unity and development.

Beyond her regional influence, Mottley is also a global advocate for climate action. Her impassioned calls for addressing climate change, a pressing issue for small island states, have earned her international recognition, including the 2021 Champions of the Earth Award from the United Nations.

President Santokhi commended Mottley’s unwavering dedication to sustainable development, economic cooperation, and free movement within CARICOM. He emphasized that her leadership embodies the resilience and unity that define the Caribbean spirit. The award not only honors her individual achievements but also symbolizes the shared values that connect Suriname and Barbados.
