Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados has earned a spot on Forbes Magazine’s prestigious list of the 100 most powerful women in the world for the second time. Mottley, 59, was recognized in the Politics and Policy category, with the magazine highlighting her remarkable leadership on the global stage.

Mottley made history in 2018 when she became Barbados’ first female prime minister. Since then, she has emerged as a powerful advocate for climate action, gaining international recognition for her impassioned speeches on the issue. In 2021, she delivered a moving address to the United Nations General Assembly, calling for urgent action on climate change. Her leadership was further acknowledged later that year when the United Nations Environment Programme named her a “Champion of the Earth for Policy Leadership.”

Forbes also commended Mottley for leading Barbados through a historic transition, as the island officially became a parliamentary republic in November 2021, removing the British monarch as its head of state.

Earlier this year, she was also named to Forbes’ Sustainability Leaders list, further solidifying her position as a global force for environmental advocacy and political leadership. Mottley’s contributions to climate change advocacy were similarly recognized in May 2022, when she became the first Barbadian to appear on the cover of Time magazine, where she was also named one of the 100 Most Influential People of the year.

Her continuous impact on both regional and global political spheres reinforces her standing as one of the most influential leaders of today.
