CARICOM Chairman and Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, addressed the Caribbean’s significant challenges and opportunities for 2025, urging the region to act united in the face of global uncertainty.

In her New Year’s message, Prime Minister Mottley emphasized that the actions of Caribbean nations in 2025 would not only define the year but also leave a lasting legacy. Mottley acknowledged the ongoing global challenges, including the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the worsening climate crisis, and conflicts in Sudan, Ukraine, Gaza, and Lebanon. She also underscored the urgent need for solutions to the crisis in Haiti and the importance of stable relations between Guyana and Venezuela.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed CARICOM’s commitment to advancing regional unity, particularly through the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). She stressed that the CSME is vital for unlocking the potential of the Caribbean’s people and economies, focusing on the free movement of nationals and regional cooperation in areas such as investment and skills development.

In addition, Mottley called for continued advocacy against global financial injustices, such as unfair blacklisting practices and limited access to financing for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). She reiterated CARICOM’s commitment to supporting the Bridgetown Initiative and advocating for reforms that would improve the financial landscape for the Caribbean and other vulnerable regions.

Mottley also highlighted the launch of the Second Decade for People of African Descent, which begins in January 2025, and emphasized the importance of furthering reparatory justice for the African Diaspora. She called on the international community to address the continued exploitation and the lack of basic resources, such as electricity, in many African countries.

Looking to the future, Mottley encouraged the Caribbean to seize opportunities in emerging fields like green energy and artificial intelligence. She called for investment in the region’s youth to ensure they are equipped to lead in these transformative industries. She also invited all Caribbean people to participate in CARIFESTA XV, set to take place in Barbados in August 2025, to celebrate the region’s culture and creativity.

In closing, Mottley urged the Caribbean to focus on unity and collective action, stressing that the responsibility for building a prosperous, resilient, and united region lies with every citizen. She expressed confidence that together, the Caribbean could become a beacon of hope in a world seeking solutions.
