Barbadian developer Mark Maloney is preparing to expand his footprint at Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) with a proposed $10 million airport hotel designed specifically to serve commercial flight crews.

The hotel project plans have been submitted to the Planning & Development Department (PDD) and are currently awaiting approval. Once approved, Maloney estimates the hotel could be completed within 12 months.

“This is a natural extension of our aviation business, which has already set high standards in service and experience,” Maloney said, emphasizing the facility’s exclusive focus on airline crew accommodations.

The new hotel will operate under the signature “M” branding and is an extension of the existing M Jet FBO (Fixed Base Operation) at GAIA—a joint venture established in 2023 between Maloney and Universal Aviation, the global FBO division of Universal Weather and Aviation, Inc.

According to Maloney, the hotel will feature:

  • 25 rooms across a split-level layout
  • Employment for 20 staff
  • 24-hour laundry service
  • Dining facilities
  • A spa
  • On-site urgent care
  • Swimming pool
  • Car rental services

The amenities are intended to complement M Jet’s current offerings, which include private aviation services such as ground handling, customs and immigration, pet clearance, and concierge.

Located at Lot 2B on the GAIA campus, the hotel is strategically placed to serve the airport’s commercial aviation traffic without interfering with private jet operations. The proposal was publicly advertised on June 18, in line with regulatory requirements, allowing a 14-day window for objections.

Maloney, who is also behind the upcoming Hyatt Ziva Hotel in Bay Street, St. Michael, stated that his construction and development group is expanding to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

The M Jet FBO facility already includes:

  • A 3,200-square-foot terminal
  • Passenger lounge and crew suite with private showers and kitchenette
  • 12-seat conference room and business centre
  • A pet relief area
  • In-house customs and immigration
  • A private apron and 36,000 square feet of hangar space accommodating large business jets

Once operational, the proposed airport hotel aims to deliver a new level of service at GAIA, supporting both the growing aviation sector and Barbados’ reputation for high-standard travel infrastructure.
