Barbados has welcomed its newest boutique gem – South Point Hotel, following a $15 million investment that Tourism Minister Ian Gooding-Edghill hailed as “a substantial and meaningful addition to Barbados’ accommodation landscape.”

Speaking at the official opening ceremony on Friday evening, the minister noted that the project signals strong investor confidence in the island’s hospitality sector. He emphasized that it aligns with the government’s mission to modernize and expand tourism through progressive policies and incentives designed to drive economic growth.

Hotel owner Al Way, of Kingsley Management, described the development as more than just a business investment, calling it “a reflection of Barbadian pride and identity.” His family-owned company oversaw the full renovation of the property, inspired by Way’s 17-year connection with the island.

“I was drawn to the South Coast’s ease and serenity,” Way shared. “I wanted to create a space that embodies those feelings — intimate, thoughtfully designed, and proudly Barbadian.”

South Point Hotel has also made a strong commitment to the local community, employing Barbadians across all levels, providing training and career development, and fostering partnerships with local farmers, fisherfolk, and creatives. The hotel continues to collaborate with key industry organizations, including the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, Invest Barbados, and the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.

During his address, Minister Gooding-Edghill highlighted several government initiatives aimed at streamlining tourism investment. Among them is the creation of a single electronic window for tourism-related applications, designed to make the process more efficient. An automatic approval system for food and beverage concessions under the Tourism Development Act will also soon be launched via the ASYCUDA electronic platform managed by the Customs and Excise Department.

The minister underlined the tourism industry’s critical role in Barbados’ economy, noting contributions of over $700 million to GDP in 2024 and $405 million during the first half of 2025. He further revealed that more than $1.5 billion has been invested in the island’s accommodation subsector amid a wave of new developments.

“The government has supported investment in high-quality tourism products and services through tax and customs duty concessions,” Gooding-Edghill stated. He added that the Ministry of Tourism remains dedicated to strengthening ties between tourism, agriculture, and other sectors, supported by a Tourism Linkages Policy aimed at reducing economic leakages and ensuring broader benefits for Barbadians.

Looking ahead, the minister announced upcoming airlift enhancements, including Air Canada’s Dreamliner 787-9 service to Barbados beginning October 26, expanding accessibility for international travelers.

With its blend of local character, luxury design, and community focus, South Point Hotel stands as a testament to the island’s evolving tourism landscape — one built on confidence, creativity, and Caribbean pride.
