Barbados News – Barbados Tops UN Multilateralism Index, Championing Global Cooperation

In a significant achievement, Barbados has been ranked first globally on the United Nations’ newly introduced Multilateralism Index, as detailed in the Sustainable Development Report 2024. This index assesses countries based on their participation in international treaties, alignment with UN voting principles, involvement in UN bodies, and financial contributions to the UN system.

The report commended Barbados for its unwavering commitment to multilateral cooperation, stating: “Barbados demonstrates strong engagement across all four dimensions of the index. Its top score reflects a steadfast commitment to the UN system and international norms.” Notably, the report emphasized that leadership in multilateralism is not confined to large or wealthy nations, highlighting Barbados’ exemplary role.

Prime Minister Mottley’s Global Advocacy

Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s leadership has been instrumental in elevating Barbados’ international standing. Her Bridgetown Initiative, launched in 2022, aims to reform the global financial system to better serve climate-vulnerable nations. The initiative advocates for affordable financing, debt relief, and equitable representation in global decision-making forums.

At the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Mottley introduced Bridgetown Initiative 3.0, emphasizing the need to “change the rules of the international financial system and reform its governance and instruments.” She also called for a new World Bank emergency liquidity facility to support climate-vulnerable countries.

Sustainable Development Progress

While Barbados leads in multilateral cooperation, the Sustainable Development Report 2024 places the country at 82nd on the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Index. The nation shows strong performance in education, healthcare, and clean water access but faces challenges in climate action and housing. The report notes that while Barbados has integrated the SDGs into national policy, gaps remain in data collection and budgeting frameworks.

A Model for Small States

Barbados’ top ranking underscores the potential for small island developing states to exert significant influence on the global stage. Through proactive diplomacy and visionary leadership, the nation exemplifies how commitment to multilateralism and sustainable development can drive meaningful change.
