Barbados is reinforcing its ambition to become a year-round Caribbean destination with the official opening of the Blue Monkey Hotel & Beach Club in Paynes Bay, St. James. The boutique luxury property is expected to create approximately 100 jobs while supporting the island’s broader tourism strategy of offering richer visitor experiences that extend well beyond the traditional peak season.
Speaking during the hotel’s opening ceremony, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley said Barbados is entering a new era of tourism—one focused not simply on attracting visitors, but on ensuring they enjoy exceptional experiences every month of the year. She stressed that the concept of an “off-season” should become a thing of the past as the island continues to diversify its hospitality, dining and entertainment offerings.

The newly opened hotel offers a collection of premium experiences that reflect the changing expectations of luxury travellers:

Culinary Experiences Take Centre Stage
Food plays a central role in the Blue Monkey experience, reflecting Barbados’ growing emphasis on culinary tourism.
The hotel’s signature restaurant, Amara, introduces one of the island’s first upscale Lebanese dining concepts, serving modern Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with locally sourced ingredients in an elegant setting. Guests can also enjoy cocktails at Azul, relax at the exclusive Beach Club restaurant and bar, or unwind at the rooftop lounge overlooking the island’s west coast. Twenty-four-hour in-suite dining further complements the hotel’s luxury offering.
The addition of these new dining venues aligns with the government’s vision of expanding the variety of culinary experiences available across Barbados, enhancing the island’s reputation as one of the Caribbean’s leading food destinations.
Ending the Idea of an “Off-Season”
During her address, Prime Minister Mottley said Barbados should no longer think in terms of peak and slow tourism periods. Instead, the country should focus on creating compelling experiences that encourage visitors to travel throughout the entire year.
She noted that today’s travellers seek flexibility, authenticity and memorable experiences, whether they are visiting for leisure, business, wellness or special events. Maintaining a vibrant tourism sector year-round will require hotels, restaurants, attractions and service providers to work together in delivering consistently high-quality experiences.
Peter George, shareholder and owner of Blue Monkey’s hospitality operations, echoed that vision, expressing confidence that Barbados can gradually eliminate the traditional distinction between busy and quiet tourism seasons by continuously investing in quality hospitality and unique visitor experiences.
Expanding Barbados’ Culinary Landscape
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of expanding food choices across the island.
While Barbados already enjoys an international reputation for its culinary scene, she believes there is significant opportunity to offer visitors even greater diversity, extended restaurant hours and dining experiences that better reflect changing global travel habits.
Government officials intend to continue engaging with the hospitality sector to encourage restaurants and entertainment venues to remain active later into the evening, giving visitors greater flexibility while further strengthening the island’s nightlife and culinary tourism appeal.

Tourism Is About More Than Hotels
Mottley emphasized that tourism success is no longer measured solely by hotel occupancy.
Modern visitors increasingly combine business travel with leisure, wellness, gastronomy, shopping and cultural experiences. This “bleisure” travel trend presents Barbados with an opportunity to showcase the full breadth of what the island offers—from its beaches and heritage sites to local restaurants, festivals and authentic community experiences.
The opening of Blue Monkey Hotel reflects this broader strategy by combining luxury accommodation with wellness, fine dining, exclusive beach experiences and personalized hospitality within a single boutique destination.
Investing in People and Sustainable Growth
The Prime Minister also reminded hospitality professionals that service remains Barbados’ greatest competitive advantage. While luxury hotels and modern amenities attract visitors, it is the warmth, professionalism and authenticity of Barbadian hospitality that creates lasting memories and encourages repeat visits.
She also encouraged continued investment in technology, sustainability and workforce development to ensure Barbados remains competitive in a rapidly evolving global tourism market.
