The Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) is switching things up this year, bringing its beloved May Day Family Fun Day to a brand-new location — the scenic Pool Woods in St John.
For the first time, the lush countryside setting will host the much-anticipated event, marking the start of a month-long celebration of community spirit under the national We Gatherin’ initiative. With more space, thicker shade trees, and a truly local vibe, organisers say this year’s May Day is shaping up to be the best yet.

General Secretary of the BWU, Toni Moore, couldn’t hide her excitement during a site visit on Friday.
“This year we are very excited about May Day,” she said. “Everything you loved at the [National] Botanical Gardens, you’ll find right here — and even better. More shade, more room for families, and a stronger sense of community.”
St John will be in the spotlight throughout May as part of the year-long We Gatherin’ series, which highlights a different parish each month under various themes. This month’s focus? Community — and the BWU is leading the charge by planting its flag firmly in Pool Woods.
Danielle Bishop, Chair of We Gatherin’ St John, called the move a “meaningful milestone” for the parish.
“We’re thrilled to welcome the BWU’s grand May Day celebrations to St John,” she said. “Using Pool Woods for such a major event is iconic. It’s going to be a wonderful partnership and an unforgettable day.”

Set for May 1, under the lively theme Bet Who Bet You, the event kicks off at 9 a.m. and promises something for everyone. Expect a jam-packed lineup featuring performances from the Barbados Police Service Band, Crop Over stars like Bruce Lee Almighty, Tian Hernandez, Sanctuary Vibes, Coco, Red Plastic Bag, and Adrian Clarke — bringing soca and kaiso vibes all day long.
Beyond the music, there will be a vibrant workers’ village showcasing local small businesses, a children’s zone filled with fun activities, a heated domino tournament, and a thrilling mixology competition. Karen Pestaina, event producer for the National Cultural Foundation, assured attendees that Pool Woods has been upgraded with top-class amenities, offering everything they enjoyed at the Botanical Gardens — plus the bonus of a greener, more expansive backdrop.

And don’t worry about parking — Pestaina confirmed that arrangements have been made to accommodate the expected crowds. Special bus services from major terminals will also make getting there easy.
Safety remains a top priority, with security teams from The Barbados Police Service and G4S on site throughout the day.
Toni Moore has just one piece of advice for families planning to attend:
“Get here early!” she urged. “People are going to be picking their picnic spots early, and you don’t want to miss out. It’s going to be an amazing day!”
