The iconic Savannah Hotel has officially joined the Sun Group portfolio, marking another major investment in Barbados’ tourism sector by businessman Bernie Weatherhead.
Confirming the acquisition last Thursday, Weatherhead stated, “We are in full control of the hotel at this stage. The purchase agreement has been completed.”
While he declined to reveal the exact purchase price, he noted that the hotel formerly part of the GEMS Project and on the market since 2019 had been put out to tender twice before. “I paid $2 million more than any tender that was ever made,” he disclosed.

Weatherhead had previously leased the 93-room hotel, with an option to buy. To ensure transparency, the property was offered to the international market before his purchase. He also revealed that Hard Rock International had expressed interest in partnering on the deal, but he opted to proceed independently.
Major Expansion Plans
The Sun Group has ambitious plans for the 3.32-acre beachfront property, starting with an additional 140 rooms, 40 of which will be developed immediately. The expansion will extend beyond the current property, as Weatherhead confirmed the purchase of nearby land, including the former Hastings Police Station, for further development.
Additionally, the Sun Group has acquired three houses opposite the hotel and placed a deposit on Brigade House. The vision for these spaces includes staff facilities, a boutique shopping area, and a bistro-style venue offering guests a prime view of horse racing at the nearby track.

Growing Presence in Barbados
This latest acquisition strengthens the Sun Group’s presence in the island’s hospitality sector. The company already owns Sugar Cane Club, Anthurium Suites, Sunny Isle Car Rentals, Time Out at the Gap, and Worthing Court Hotel – the latter two also being former GEMS properties.
Weatherhead also revealed a significant investment along the Bay Street corridor, having purchased nearly all the properties between Copacabana and the Selbys’ house on Lower Bay Street. Additionally, his company has secured properties on the opposite side, including the historic Martineau House.
Future Tourism Projects on the Horizon
Beyond hotels, Weatherhead hinted at reviving Forest Safari, a nature-based project spanning over 30 acres in Joe’s River, St. Joseph. Initially shelved, the project may now move forward following government interest.

Weatherhead remains optimistic about Barbados’ tourism future. He believes the island needs more attractions for both locals and visitors and is actively working to create them. His latest venture, Haymans Market, was developed with this vision in mind, providing a vibrant gathering place for Barbadians and tourists alike.
