The West Indies Rum and Spirits Producers Association (WIRSPA) is spearheading an expansion of the Caribbean Rum Trail, a multi-country initiative aimed at enhancing tourism and showcasing the region’s rich rum-making heritage. This trail connects visitors with distilleries, rum shops, and cultural sites across CARICOM nations, offering an immersive experience into the Caribbean’s storied relationship with rum.

Vaughn Renwick, CEO of WIRSPA, emphasized the trail’s role in promoting the Caribbean as the birthplace of rum. “We think that when people come to a Caribbean country for the first time – most people see the Caribbean as the home of rum – they want to experience the local products, so experiencing rum at the origin is one of those experiences,” he stated.
The trail currently features renowned distilleries such as Appleton Estate in Jamaica and Mount Gay in Barbados, each offering unique tours that delve into their history and production processes. Efforts are underway to develop digital content and a mobile application to enhance visitor engagement and facilitate trip planning across multiple islands.

Beyond tourism, the initiative aims to support local economies by creating jobs in agriculture, manufacturing, hospitality, and retail sectors. The trail also serves as a platform to educate visitors on the historical significance of rum in the Caribbean, including its connections to sugar production and colonial history.
As the Caribbean Rum Trail continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the region’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while fostering sustainable tourism development.
