Caribbean News – CDB’s 55th Annual Meeting to Focus on Resilient Institutions for a Sustainable Caribbean

The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) is set to host its 55th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors in Brasília, Brazil, from June 9-12, focusing on the role of strong institutions in shaping a greener, more resilient, and inclusive Caribbean. Under the theme Building the Future: Resilient Institutions for a Greener, Stronger, and Inclusive Caribbean, the event will bring together leaders and stakeholders to tackle pressing development challenges.

At the official launch event at the Hilton Hotel, CDB President Daniel Best highlighted the crucial role of robust institutions in driving economic growth and sustainable development. “There is no path to achieving a just energy transition without resilient and innovative institutions,” he emphasized, noting that institutional strength is essential in every aspect of national progress.

The selection of Brazil as the host country is no coincidence. Best described it as a strategic move to leverage Brazil’s experience in innovation and development to strengthen Caribbean-Latin American collaboration. The timing is also key, as Brazil is set to host the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 30). Best sees this as a unique opportunity to align climate action efforts and maximize regional sustainability impact.

This year’s meeting agenda will focus on urgent issues such as climate change, development financing, and building resilient communities. Best stressed the need for open and honest conversations about the role of the private sector in advancing the region’s economic goals.

Drawing from his recent experience working with the Government of Barbados, Best addressed the critical capacity gaps in governance across the Caribbean. He called on multilateral organizations to step up their support, stating, “We need to go even further—assessing existing skill sets, strengthening them, and, in many cases, addressing the lack of human resources within our institutions.”

The meeting will be chaired by Vivian Becky Mendez Mueller, Brazil’s Deputy Secretary for International Affairs and Development at the Ministry of Planning and Budget. She reinforced Brazil’s dedication to supporting sustainable development, stating, “Strong institutions are fundamental to sustainable development, with resilience being key to their effectiveness.”

With a bold vision for the future, the CDB’s 55th Annual Meeting aims to lay the foundation for stronger, more adaptable institutions that can drive the Caribbean’s long-term success.
