Two influential global figures, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, are set to address Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders next month at a high-level summit in Barbados. The Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat announced the event on Wednesday, highlighting discussions on climate finance and regional security.
Scheduled for February 19-21, the summit will be chaired by Barbados’ Prime Minister, Mia Mottley. The opening ceremony at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre will also feature speeches from outgoing CARICOM Chairman and Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell; newly elected Montserrat Premier, Reuben Meade; and CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett.

Following the ceremony, the summit’s business sessions will take place at the Wyndham Grand Barbados, Sam Lord’s Castle in St. Philip.
Held under the theme “Strength in Unity: Forging Caribbean Resilience, Inclusive Growth, and Sustainable Development,” the summit will focus on key regional challenges. Discussions will include food and nutrition security, climate change, Haiti’s ongoing crisis, security concerns, digital resilience, external relations, and the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). Additionally, leaders will address maritime and air transport issues as well as the topic of reparations.

The CARICOM Secretariat emphasized that Prime Minister Mottley has set the agenda for the bloc’s priorities over the next six months. In her New Year’s address, she stressed the need to fully implement the CSME, facilitating free movement of goods, skills, labor, and services within the 15-member regional body.
