According to Rosette Peirce, the chief executive officer of the Barbados Turf Club, the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup race-day is set to return to the Garrison Savannah this year for the first time since 2020 and will be bigger and better than ever before. This prestigious sporting event will be aired on SportsMax and will feature several new elements, including a Gold Cup Village and a new betting initiative that could award a lucky gamester with more than $40,000.
Peirce explained that the Gold Cup Village is a new all-inclusive package located on the in-field, offering a prime spot for television viewing and elevated seating. Additionally, a big soca six pay-out is in line for the Gold Cup, where six races will be selected to put into a pool on the day. Punters will need to place their bets before the first leg runs and pay to play the six winners. If they correctly predict all six winners in six races, they could win a jackpot of up to $45,000, which will grow with the investment from Gold Cup day.
Pre-Gold Cup activities will also take place on Friday, March 3, as customary at the Garrison Savannah. Peirce expressed her excitement for the return of the Gold Cup and the positive response and enthusiasm from the public and stakeholders. She believes that the sport will continue to grow from strength to strength, even in a challenging environment.
Peirce reported that sales for the Gold Cup are already sold-out, with bookings up since the announcement in October 2022. The overseas bookings were the first to secure their seats, resulting in a 95% sold-out status by late November. The only tickets remaining are general entry and VIP premium, which is an all-inclusive package. Peirce is confident that the event will meet its target and is pleased with the progress of freshening up the plant, dealing with the track, and ensuring that the turf is in good condition and ready for the year.
