Barbados Aims to Solidify Position as a Must-Visit Destination with Increased Airlift

The Minister of Tourism in Barbados is optimistic about the island’s prospects as a top destination for UK travelers, thanks to an upcoming surge in airlift. During a trade event in London marking the launch of World Travel Market 2023, Ian Gooding-Edghill expressed his enthusiasm for the pivotal partnerships Barbados has established with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Both airlines are committed to enhancing their services to the island in 2024.

British Airways is set to introduce Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners for flights from Heathrow to Barbados in the summer of 2024. This move will augment the airline’s capacity by approximately 10%, a development that elicited applause from event attendees.

Meanwhile, Virgin Atlantic is making substantial strides to increase its airlift to Barbados from Manchester. They have already elevated the service from four to five times a week as of November 4. Furthermore, between January 10 and March 29, three additional flights per week will be incorporated into Virgin Atlantic’s Heathrow to Barbados schedule. To sweeten the deal, the airline is deploying an Airbus A330neo aircraft from Heathrow to Barbados every Saturday throughout the winter season, commencing on November 25.

Ian Gooding-Edghill is enthusiastic about these developments, asserting that they underscore the demand for Barbados as an essential destination and reinforce its standing as a central hub for the eastern Caribbean. He emphasized the immense value of the island’s partnerships with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, citing these collaborations as one of the pillars of their success.

Gooding-Edghill also shared his optimism regarding the upcoming winter cruise season, which is shaping up to be highly promising. Barbados is projecting 392 cruise calls with an estimated 715,000 passengers, a notable increase from the 358 calls and approximately 608,000 passengers in the previous year.

“We are anticipating that our overall cruise passenger numbers for the winter season will match our peak year in 2018/2019,” he stated. “The success of this cruise season will contribute significantly to the overall growth and resilience of our tourism industry.”
