In her brief remarks, she highlighted the role of independent cinema as a steppingstone for aspiring filmmakers, providing not only outstanding cinematic experiences but also fostering networking and learning opportunities within the film sector.

Founded in 2017 by Sir Trevor Carmichael and American-born filmmaker Jennifer Smith-Bent, BIFF aims to fill the void in the film experience in Barbados. The festival attracts a diverse range of entries covering social, political, and economic themes, with selections judged by an esteemed panel, including veteran Hollywood actor Stephen Lang, known for his role in the Avatar trilogy.

BIFF presents three major awards for Best Feature, Best Documentary, and Best Short Film, along with special awards recognizing exceptional storytelling and environmental subjects. A grant of BBD $10,000 is also up for grabs for a Barbadian filmmaker producing a short film.
