Major Changes Unveiled for Pierhead Development – Construction to Begin late 2024

Investors behind The Pierhead’s ambitious $160 million residential and commercial project in the heart of The City have revealed a new vision for the undertaking.

In an update on the project’s direction, a spokesperson, who chose to remain anonymous for now, disclosed on Thursday that the original plan, which included a marina for luxury yachts and high-end branded stores, will undergo significant alterations. The spokesperson highlighted several improvements, including the removal of entertainment facilities and a hotel complex from the blueprint.

Instead, the revised project will prioritize local businesses, with a focus on welcoming back fishing boats and cruising catamarans that were temporarily displaced. “Supporting these local enterprises is vital for this area of the city,” the spokesperson emphasized.

The spokesperson outlined the updated features of the city venture, which will include retail units, restaurants, cafes, and a heritage-based visitor attraction. There are hopes to incorporate the iconic and conserved Blackwoods Screw Dock into the attraction, adding to the site’s unique charm.

Located adjacent to the historic Fort Willoughby and accessible via the Chamberlain Bridge, also known as the Swing Bridge, the development’s southern boundary will be Pierhead Lane, leading to a Beach Club and Carlisle Beach and Bay.

Further details regarding the project will be revealed in due course. However, preliminary salvage, demolition, and piling works are expected to conclude by September or October, with construction slated to commence soon after.

Careful attention is being paid to salvage valuable heritage items such as coral stone, brick, timber, and steel. The representative anticipates completing Phase 1 by the first half of 2026.

The Pierhead development, originating from the vision of local businessman Sir Allan Fields over 20 years ago, is finally materializing with support from real estate mogul Sir Paul Altman in recent years.

The Barbadian government is closely monitoring the project’s progress, as it is expected to set a precedent for the redevelopment and revitalization of this significant area in the national capital.

Situated within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, The Pierhead project signifies a pivotal step towards preserving and enhancing the cultural heritage of the region.
