A landmark new ferry service connecting Barbados with Guyana and Trinidad is set to launch in the next few months, according to Guyana President Dr. Mohamed Irfan Ali. This ferry, a collaborative effort between Barbados, Guyana, and Trinidad, will transport both passengers and containers, as reported by officials from Guyana.
“In another two or three months, that ferry will begin operations, and we are hoping that this will instill confidence in the private sector,” Ali stated.

Customs and Immigration officials from Barbados, Guyana, and Trinidad have already “agreed that most systems are in place and can be adjusted to accommodate the [ferry] service,” according to a statement from CARICOM.
The initial service will be operated by the Galleons Passage ship, which has a capacity of about 400 passengers. While specific timeframes for the service have not yet been released, the journey between Guyana and Trinidad is expected to take nearly a day’s sailing.

The ferry service may expand beyond the southern Caribbean. Although ferry services are popular, particularly with travelers, their broader use in the region has been limited to certain areas: the US and British Virgin Islands, the greater St Maarten area (including islands like Anguilla, Saba, Statia, St Barth, and St Kitts), and Eastern Caribbean islands like Martinique, Saint Lucia, Guadeloupe, and Dominica.
Discussions are already underway to establish a common regional ferry service within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which could significantly improve intra-regional transportation. Additionally, a company called Connect Caribe is also planning to set up a pan-Caribbean ferry service.
