Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley has been recognized as one of the world’s foremost environmental leaders, earning a place on The Independent Climate 100 List for 2024. The list, unveiled during Climate Week NYC 2024, which runs from September 22 to 29, spotlights influential figures dedicated to tackling the climate crisis.
The Climate 100 List is a new initiative that celebrates global changemakers driving positive climate solutions, without ranking or comparing their contributions. Mottley’s selection highlights her bold leadership and innovative push for global financial reforms through her Bridgetown Initiative. This initiative advocates for a fairer, more equitable global financial system to support vulnerable nations disproportionately affected by climate change.

First introduced in 2022, the Bridgetown Initiative has gained international traction by calling for a revamp of the global financial structure, urging wealthier nations and financial institutions to increase their contributions to climate action. Mottley most recently launched Bridgetown Initiative 3.0 at the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States in Antigua and Barbuda.
This recognition follows Mottley’s previous accolade in 2023 when she was included in TIME magazine’s Climate List of the 100 Most Influential Leaders. Her continued advocacy underscores her growing influence on the global stage in the fight against climate change.
