The We Gatherin’ 2025 celebrations have begun with overwhelming success, sparking hopes that the event will become a recurring tradition every five years.
Designed to honor Barbados and its people, the initiative has already generated a surge in national pride and community engagement, according to Senator John King, director of the We Gatherin’ 2025 Secretariat.

Following its suspension in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the year-long festival officially launched in January, bringing a series of cultural, educational, and entertainment events to St. Lucy from New Year’s Day.
Speaking after a ceremony at State House on Wednesday—where ten St. Lucy residents were recognized for their contributions to community life—King applauded the parish for setting a high standard.
“I want to thank the parish organizing committee and the people of St. Lucy for making We Gatherin’ a great success already. Just the start has been fantastic,” he stated. “The entire community has been coming out, and we’ve even had support from across the island.”
He noted the strong turnout at events, including a cricket match that drew a noticeable contingent from St. George.
As the celebrations move to St. Peter in February, King remained tight-lipped about specific events but promised an exciting lineup. “Look out for St. Peter,” he teased. “The friendly rivalry between the parishes is on, and we expect St. Peter to step it up a notch.”
Prime Minister Mia Mottley also expressed her enthusiasm for the festival’s momentum, emphasizing her long-term vision for it to become a national tradition.

“When 2020 was taken from us because of the pandemic, we committed to making this a periodic event rather than a one-off celebration,” she said. “While I may not be in this position in 2030 or 2035, I hope Barbadians will continue to come together every five years—to reflect as families, strong communities, and parishes—on who we are and what we do.”
