Barbados News – Barbados to Host 2026 Women’s CPL with New Franchise, Playoffs, and Festival Format

The Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) is entering a new era in 2026, with organizers unveiling an expanded tournament that will feature a fourth franchise, a dedicated standalone schedule, and a festival-style celebration of women’s cricket in Barbados.

Set to run across ten uninterrupted days at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, the revamped competition will showcase eight matches and introduce the newly formed Jamaica Empress, marking the first expansion of the tournament since its launch.

The addition of Jamaica Empress alongside the Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors, and Trinbago Knight Riders ensures representation from the Caribbean’s four major cricketing territories, creating a broader regional footprint for the league.

Unlike previous seasons that operated alongside the men’s Caribbean Premier League, the 2026 edition will stand on its own, giving women’s cricket an exclusive stage and a dedicated spotlight. Organizers say the move reflects a long-term commitment to growing the women’s game both on and off the field.

Action begins on September 5 when host franchise Barbados Tridents take on Trinbago Knight Riders in the tournament opener. Following a series of group-stage encounters and double-header matchdays, the competition will introduce a playoff round for the first time. The second and third-placed teams will battle in a semi-final on September 16, with the winner advancing to the championship match against the top-ranked team on September 17.

WCPL CEO Pete Russell described the tournament as a platform designed to extend beyond cricket.

“The WCPL is about much more than what happens on the field. We are creating a platform where women can be celebrated, communities can come together, and young girls can see clear pathways to success in sport and beyond.”

A major part of that vision is the launch of the league’s new “She’s In” campaign, aimed at increasing engagement with female audiences throughout the Caribbean. The initiative will be promoted heavily across social media and community channels while highlighting stories of participation, leadership, and opportunity.

Organizers are also transforming matchdays into community-focused events. Fans attending games at Kensington Oval can expect children’s activity zones, coaching clinics, health and wellness experiences, and marketplaces featuring products and services from women-led businesses across the region.

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews believes the tournament’s continued growth is creating meaningful opportunities for future generations.

“I’ve seen firsthand the impact of WCPL on women across the region. It’s powerful and far-reaching. It illuminates the potential in every girl, giving them not just visibility, but something to believe in and a dream to chase.”

While the focus remains on delivering a successful 2026 edition in Barbados, league officials are already looking ahead. Plans are reportedly being explored to invite overseas franchise teams into the competition from 2027, a move that could significantly elevate the WCPL’s global profile and strengthen its position within the international women’s T20 landscape.

For now, however, attention turns to Barbados, where an expanded field, a new franchise, and a dedicated festival atmosphere promise to make the 2026 Women’s CPL the most ambitious edition of the tournament to date.
