Barbados News – Barbados Cruise Tourism Set for Growth as Orient Express Corinthian Arrives

Barbados is strengthening its position as a major Southern Caribbean cruise hub, with rising visitor projections and the arrival of an ultra-luxury sailing yacht adding momentum to the island’s cruise tourism sector.

The outlook for the coming seasons is promising. Summer cruise arrivals are projected to exceed 47,000 in 2027 and rise above 90,000 in 2028, bringing Barbados closer to pre-pandemic levels. At the same time, the arrival of the Orient Express Corinthian highlights the island’s growing appeal to the luxury cruise market.

Summer Cruise Arrivals Set to Rebound

During the 2026 State of the Tourism Industry Update, Tia Broomes, Senior Business Development Officer for Cruise at Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), outlined expectations for stronger summer cruise activity.

More than 47,000 summer arrivals are projected for 2027, with further growth anticipated in 2028. MSC Cruises is expected to play an important role through a year-round programme aboard MSC Opera, with Barbados serving as an embarkation port for Southern Caribbean itineraries.

The 2028 outlook also includes cruise activity from operators such as Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, alongside the anticipated return of Disney Cruise Line for a call. For Barbados, the projections point to opportunities to expand cruise tourism beyond the traditional winter peak.

Bridgetown Welcomes the Orient Express Corinthian

A significant milestone for the Port of Bridgetown came with the arrival of the Orient Express Corinthian, which selected Barbados as its homeport for Caribbean itineraries from October 2026 through March 2027.

The vessel was welcomed by an official party led by Ian Stewart, Chief Operations Officer, alongside Captain Eric Saint Plancat and the ship’s crew and guests. The occasion was marked by a traditional plaque exchange ceremony.

Stewart highlighted the importance of homeporting to the cruise sector, noting that continued investment in port infrastructure and collaboration with tourism partners have helped establish Barbados as a leading cruise hub in the Southern Caribbean.

Of the 366 vessel calls anticipated during the 2026–2027 winter season, approximately 206 are expected to be homeporting calls. The season is projected to bring 713,407 cruise visitors to the island.

A New Chapter in Ultra-Luxury Cruising

The Orient Express Corinthian represents a new chapter for the Orient Express brand, historically associated with luxury rail travel. Its move into marine travel marks the introduction of a new category of high-end cruise experiences.

At approximately 220 metres long, the yacht offers 54 luxury suites, alongside amenities that include a spa, cinema and Michelin-starred restaurant. It combines sailing capability with liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion, reflecting a distinctive approach to luxury travel at sea.

After completing a 14-day transatlantic voyage from Portugal, the vessel made Barbados its first Caribbean port of call. It is scheduled to make nine calls at Bridgetown during the 2026–2027 winter season.

Homeporting Creates Wider Tourism Opportunities

Homeporting brings benefits beyond the time a vessel spends in port. Passengers may arrive ahead of departure, stay in local accommodation, dine at restaurants, use ground transportation and explore the island’s attractions. Crew members and vessel operations also contribute to demand for local services.

The presence of a luxury vessel such as the Orient Express Corinthian adds another dimension to Barbados’ cruise offering, helping the island attract travellers seeking smaller-scale, premium experiences alongside conventional cruise itineraries.

Barbados also provides LNG bunkering services through a partnership between Barbados Port Inc. and Barbados National Energy Company Limited. Such services can support the needs of vessels operating through the port while adding to the island’s marine-service capabilities.

Barbados’ Cruise Sector Looks Ahead

With summer arrivals projected to rise and the winter season expected to bring hundreds of thousands of cruise visitors, Barbados is preparing for continued activity across different segments of the market.

The combination of expanded itineraries, homeporting operations and luxury vessels such as the Orient Express Corinthian demonstrates the range of opportunities available to the island’s cruise industry.

As Barbados continues to invest in its port and work with tourism partners, the focus will be on converting increased cruise activity into wider economic benefits for accommodation providers, restaurants, transport operators, retailers and local attractions.
