The government of Barbados is taking steps to enhance its competitiveness in the luxury goods market as part of a broader economic and tourism strategy, according to Prime Minister Mia Mottley.
Mottley has invited the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) to propose recommendations for repositioning the island as a premier destination for high-end shopping.

“I’ve invited the private sector—the Chamber of Commerce specifically—to submit to me a paper with respect to luxury goods again,” the Prime Minister stated during the opening of the Courts Superstore at W Plaza, Welches, on Thursday.
She acknowledged that Barbados had lost some ground in the luxury goods sector and emphasized the importance of reclaiming its position. “It is part and parcel of our tourism brand and part of our value proposition, and we need to claim it back,” Mottley added.

While no specific policy changes were disclosed, the Prime Minister assured that the government is actively reviewing ways to improve the island’s retail and investment landscape.
Her remarks align with ongoing efforts to enhance customer service and upgrade commercial infrastructure in key retail areas. She noted that developments like the new Courts Superstore contribute to improving the overall consumer experience while reflecting the administration’s support for both mass-market and niche retail sectors.
