In an effort to ease the financial strain of medical expenses, the Barbados Public Workers Cooperative Credit Union Limited (BPWCCUL) has formed a strategic partnership with Bayview Hospital.
This collaboration aims to make premium healthcare more accessible by offering financial support to Barbadians who struggle to afford necessary procedures. Through BPWCCUL’s loan programs, qualifying current and potential members can receive discounts on medical services at Bayview Hospital.

During a signing ceremony at BPWCCUL headquarters on Thursday, Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer Gail Best-Niles highlighted the critical need for such an initiative. She revealed that medical expenses account for a significant share of personal loans issued by the credit union.
“What we have found in terms of looking for personal loans, is that more than 50 percent were for medical procedures. It’s an unfortunate case where a lot of Barbadians don’t have medical health insurance; that’s another thing that we are going to reach out to our members about,” she explained.

Best-Niles further emphasized the ongoing challenge of healthcare affordability. “As much as we have tried to educate people about the benefits of having a health insurance plan, a lot of people still do not. So with 50 percent of personal loans coming for health-related issues, we recognize that members are finding the healthcare in Barbados to be a bit burdensome.”
The partnership represents a step toward bridging the gap between healthcare accessibility and financial constraints, ensuring that more Barbadians can receive the medical care they need without excessive financial hardship.
