After years of delays, construction of the highly anticipated Hyatt Ziva hotel at Carlisle Bay is finally moving forward. Developer and construction magnate Mark Maloney confirmed on Wednesday that the vertical build is set to begin within the next two months, marking a pivotal moment for Bridgetown’s revitalisation and Barbados’ largest private investment to date.
Speaking at the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council’s 4th Annual Construction and Design Conference at Sandals Royal, Maloney shared that significant groundwork has already been completed. “We just did the ground improvements, which is getting everything under the substructure ready to put the ground floor slab on and then to come up with the structure, and that’s all complete,” he explained.

With foundation works set to start shortly, the project is on track for completion by the end of 2027. The hotel will feature 380 rooms overlooking Carlisle Bay and will play a key role in Bridgetown’s transformation, alongside other major hospitality and commercial developments such as the Pierhead and Royalton projects.
“This is the largest single project undertaken by a private investor in Barbados,” Maloney noted. “It has taken us quite a while to get here, but we are ticking the last set of boxes and should be moving ahead on the vertical build very soon.”

Beyond its scale, the project promises to generate thousands of jobs—around 2,000 during construction and another 1,200 permanent positions once the hotel opens. Maloney highlighted the broader economic impact, emphasising that local reinvestment will inspire confidence among international investors.
Originally announced in 2016 as a 237-room Hyatt Centric boutique hotel, the project has since been rebranded as a Hyatt Ziva, known for its family-friendly, all-inclusive resorts. The development is expected to inject new energy into the capital, expand the island’s hospitality offerings, and reinforce Barbados’ position as a premier destination in the Caribbean.
